September 5th marks Ganesh Chaturthi in the Hindu calendar, a day which celebrates Lord Ganesh, the elephant god. Ganesh is the remover of obstacles, people pray and remember him when they are starting something new such as school, a new job or such and that any new activity through the year, is successful and has no obstacles.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a huge festival in India, people pray and offer food and sweets at temples as well as build large statues of the deity and take to the streets. Some Ganesh idols are immersed in water as a symbol of returning to mother earth.
