Happy Lohri

lohri-2017

For those of you who don’t know what it is, 13th of January always marks Lohri in the Punjabi calendar. It is the festival that celebrates the passing of the longest night and that days begin to get lighter.

It is also associated with the harvest season and farmers usually harvest sugarcane around this period or collect any rent or fees of farming lands. A few days before Lohri, children would go door-to-door singing folk songs, they are rewarded with foods such as peanuts, popcorn, jaggery, sugar sweets, chikki (sesame brittle) and sometimes money, turning them away or not giving is considered bad luck.

If there are newly weds or new borns, the rewards increase. The collections made by the children, known as Lohri, is distributed during the night of the festival. Prayers are read and there is singing and dancing around the fire.   Happy Lohri to everyone celebrating!
